Neurodynamic Solutions

A patient presents with spinal pain, radiating symptoms, numbness or complaints that cannot be fully explained by examining muscles and joints alone.

Are the tissues you are treating really the source of the problem? Or could the nervous system be playing a significant role in your patient's symptoms?

Clinical Neurodynamics (NDS) is an approach developed by physiotherapist Michael Shacklock, integrating knowledge of nervous system mechanics and physiology with clinical assessment and treatment selection.

Throughout the course, you will learn to perform and interpret neurodynamic tests, palpate neural structures and analyse your findings within the context of the overall clinical presentation.

You will learn how to differentiate conditions involving possible peripheral nerve or nerve root contributions from problems associated with other musculoskeletal structures. You will also develop the ability to recognise when examination findings suggest the need for further medical assessment rather than continuing with standard physiotherapy treatment.

You will explore manual therapy techniques and the principles of selecting, dosing and progressively adapting neurodynamic exercises. You will learn how to tailor treatment to the patient's symptoms, load tolerance and individual needs.

The programme consists of two four-day modules: Upper Quarter and Lower Quarter. Particular emphasis is placed on practical skills, precision in performing tests and treatment techniques, neural palpation and the development of clinical reasoning skills.

This course is not simply about learning more techniques. Its purpose is to develop your ability to make well-reasoned clinical decisions — from identifying which structures may be contributing to a patient's symptoms, through interpreting examination findings, to selecting and modifying treatment.
